´╗┐Witness directed by Peter Weir

Exploring issues of identity and belonging: individual identity v. that of a group; a religious community at odds with wider society; the interests of an individual being of less importance than those of the group to which one belongs; what forms identity? how does belonging to a group define but also restrict an individual?

These are some of the central issues explored in Weir's film, set in an Amish community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Weir contrasts modern America with the Amish community to highlight some of the problems associated with contemporary society, including pollution, breakdown of family and alienation. The Amish live a simple, plain life; their world is founded on love, support and commitment to faith and family.
